Who is an optometrist?
Optometrists are health care professionals who typically provide comprehensive primary eye care.
Optometrists collaborate with other eye care professionals such as ophthalmologists (Eye surgeons) and Ophthalmic Clinical Officers (OCOs) to provide quality eye care to patients.
In Uganda, optometrists are trained at Makerere University, College of Health Sciences and licensed by the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council.
What Optometrists Do
- Perform eye exams and vision tests.
- Prescribe and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses
- Monitor medically related eye conditions related to diseases like diabetes
- Manage and treat conditions like Dry Eye and glaucoma
- Provide low-vision aids and vision therapy.
What the Optometrists Association of Uganda does
The Optometrists Association of Uganda champions the rights and goals of all optometrists in Uganda.
It also ensures quality among its members through professional CPDs and it assists the Uganda Allied Health Professionals Council by offering guidance on the regulation of the practice of optometry.
